Camera Export:

To export camera data from 3DS Max you must first create a target camera and animate.

Script to Export - Path of the Terragen (.tgs) script file to be created.

Anim Directory to Export - Directory and name of image files which will be rendered in Terragen.

Frames - Exports frames between start and end values shown. Start defaults to 1 and does not allow use of frame 0 since Terragen scripts begin at frame 1. Lite version is limited to exporting 100 frames and will give a message error if more than 100 are used.

Execute - Used to create script. Will give message error if above information has not been provided by user.

 

Terrain:

Import Terrain - Importing terrain geometry requires the use of two plugins: For Export Only from Jo Meder (for exporting terrain geometry from Terragen) and Obj2Max Version 4.0 from Hab (for importing into 3DS Max). TER format is not built into TG-Max yet and objects must be imported using OBJ format instead. After installing plugins, export terrain geometry from Terragen by clicking on Accessories from Landscape window. Turn off Swap Y and Z axes if it is already checked. When OBJ file has been exported go to 3DS Max and do File, Import, and locate OBJ file previously created. For first time use of Obj2Max, make sure the following are set:

  • Import Options: Multiple
  • Geometry Options: all off
  • Smooth Group: 0
  • Vertex Scale: 1.0

Terrain Size - Whenever Terragen terrain is imported the geometry will be read for size and displayed.

Optimize Terrain - Once the terrain is imported you'll likely notice that the geometry is both very high res and is slowing down your computer. To fix this turn on Optimize Terrain using Enable button and pick terrain using Select Terrain. This will apply an optimize modifier to the geometry and make it into a low res version for easier viewing. Should show as normal high res when rendered. To modify resolution detail simply change Face Thresh and Edge Thresh values and press Update. Use Preview Color to change color of optimized terrain. To turn off optimize on geometry without deleting modifier simply turn on or off Enable. Use Render Optimize to toggle terrain to be low res when rendered. Scene Optimize allows scene in viewport to be toggled as low res.

Scale Terrain - To scale terrain for use with scene objects at real world scale, turn on using Enable. In Camera, Scaled button will automatically come on indicating camera is scaled to terrain. When exporting script, camera position will change to TG units whether scene is scaled or not. Use Select Terrain to pick terrain geometry to scale. If water has been created from Create Water or sun from Create Sunlight they can be linked to terrain using Link water to terrain or Link sun to terrain. Position is used to change terrain position. Reset sets terrain position to [0,0,0]. By pressing Real World Scale, terrain will be converted to scale value depending on whatever Metre Point Spacing value has been entered (default: 30). Inches, Feet, CM and Metre values automatically convert showing what 1 TG Unit would be equal to. 3DS Max System Units must be set to inches. Reset will change terrain scale to original TG Unit Scale. Default will change terrain scale to original Metre Point Spacing value of 30.

 

Camera:

Camera Position - Pick camera using Select Camera to modify position values. Camera selected from Export Script will be the same. Press Scaled to enable using scaled difference to real world scale.

Camera Reset - Will reset camera position to [0,0,0].

Target Reset - Will reset camera target position to [0,0,0].

 

FOV:

FOV (Field of View) - If a camera has been selected from either Export Script or Camera FOV will be enabled. FOV is used to modify zoom value to camera. Values of FOV, Terragen Zoom and MM (35mm equivalent) automatically update when changed.
